You’ve never ridden a mountain bike before.
SKILL LEVEL 2 – BEGINNER
You have limited experience with off-road trail riding.
SKILL LEVEL 3 – NOVICE
You’re hooked on riding off-road and wide dirt trails (atv trails or doubletrack), but still lack the skills and confidence to consistently ride terrain with roots, rocks, tight corners, tight trees and steeps. Singletrack – what is singletrack?
SKILL LEVEL 4 – STRONG NOVICE
Your dedication to mountain biking has led you to your first handful of rides on real singletrack. You enjoy smooth mellow singletrack, although often the trees feel too tight, the climbs come too quick to shift and have you walking, and the obstacles have you a bit surprised as you did not even know people ride right over logs!
SKILL LEVEL 5 – INTERMEDIATE
At a controlled speed and on mellow singletrack terrain, you are comfortable riding a variety of singletrack which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks and sand. You are comfortable and confident rolling over small obstacles (a couple inches high) like roots, rocks and small rollable drops (a couple inches high). On rare occasions you take your wheels off the ground intentionally. You are now becoming comfortable in anticipating terrain and shift gears accordingly and you are comfortable using both front and rear brakes when required.
SKILL LEVEL 6 – STRONG INTERMEDIATE
You are comfortable riding a variety of singletrack which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks and sand and are comfortable doing so on more challenging terrain. You are comfortable and confident with a front wheel lift and rear wheel lift to get up and over larger obstacles (up to 6 inches) such as roots and rocks that are not rollable. When climbing you shift your bodyweight forward in efforts to keep traction on your front wheel. Climbing is typically successful, unless technical roots, rocks or corners have you walking a short section. You are comfortable with speed and letting go of your brakes as long as you can see the
exit or end of the descent. You are also now grasping effective cornering techniques although still need to work on your timing and coordination.
SKILL LEVEL 7 – ADVANCED
You are comfortable riding a variety of singletrack which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks and sand and are comfortable doing so on aggressive terrain with little braking. You can hop over obstacles such as small roots and rocks that less advanced riders may wheel lift over. You use the brakes sparingly, and are open to taking some air off little rocks and roots. Your timing and coordination on all types of berms is solid. You are comfortable leaning your bike through the corner and exit with acceleration.
SKILL LEVEL 8 – EXPERT
You are comfortable riding a variety of singletrack which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks and sand and are comfortable doing so on aggressive terrain with little braking. You rarely, if ever, walk. Small drops are no issue for you and you are comfortable with having both wheels leave the ground. Climbing technical roots, rocks and switchbacks are no issue for you. You use the brakes sparingly and air off of every rock, root and drop you can find. Your timing and coordination on all types of berms, switchbacks and corners is solid. You are comfortable leaning your bike through fast corners and exit with acceleration.
SKILL LEVEL 9 – PRO
You are a mountain bike god/goddess. You can handle the most technical terrain imaginable, eat up steeps for breakfast and can hit all the gaps, drops and jumps any trail throws at you.
You are a couch potato.
You cannot ride for more than half an hour on flat terrain at a time, and the thought of climbing on a bike is daunting.
You exercise less than 1 hour per week.

Single Supplement. A single supplement fee is applied for guests who wish to have a private room or for those traveling alone who do not have a roommate.

Activity Level. This expedition is considered a Level 3 out of 5 and is designed to be accessible to anyone with a moderate level of fitness. No prior experience is required for any of the activities. Our expert guides will provide a full safety briefing and hands-on instruction on the proper use of all gear before each leg of the trip. The activities are a dynamic mix of physical challenges and stunning exploration: • Trekking: Our hikes take place on varying terrain, from established dirt paths to rocky, uneven ground. • Biking: We will ride on a variety of surfaces, including scenic gravel and dirt roads, as well as single tracks (trails just wide enough for one bike). While some sections may be on paved roads, traffic is very light, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. • Rafting: The thrilling descent of the Chicamocha River involves a mix of Class III and IV rapids. These are considered intermediate to advanced rapids, offering an exhilarating challenge with powerful currents and large waves. For your convenience and peace of mind, a support vehicle will be available for the majority of the activities, so you can take a break or simply relax at any point if you wish.
Weather and Elevation: Colombia's climate is as diverse as its landscapes, and it defies the traditional four seasons found in other parts of the world. Instead of seasonal changes, the weather is primarily determined by altitude. This means you can travel a short distance and experience a dramatic shift from a hot, humid jungle to a cool, crisp mountain environment. The country's climate is often divided into distinct thermal floors: • Tierra Caliente (Hot Land): Below 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), this zone features a hot, tropical climate with average temperatures above 24°C (75°F). This is the climate of the Amazon rainforest, the Caribbean coast, and the Pacific lowlands. • Tierra Templada (Temperate Land): Located between 1,000 and 2,000 meters (3,300-6,600 feet), this is Colombia's most populated zone. It offers a pleasant, spring-like climate with average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 24°C (63°F to 75°F). This is where you'll find the famous Coffee Region and cities like Medellín. • Tierra Fría (Cold Land): From 2,000 to 3,000 meters (6,600-9,800 feet), the air is cool and refreshing, with average temperatures between 10°C and 17°C (50°F to 63°F). This is the climate of the capital city, Bogotá. • Páramo & Tierra Helada (Moorland & Frozen Land): Above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), the climate is cold and often misty, with temperatures dropping below 10°C (50°F). These high-altitude ecosystems are unique and vital, home to glaciers and specialized flora. While temperature is dictated by altitude, precipitation is influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which creates two rainy seasons and two dry seasons in many regions. However, these are generally less distinct than seasons in other countries, meaning you can find warm, cool, or cold weather in Colombia any time of year—you just need to travel up or down a mountain. - Weather & Temperatures during this trip Colombia's climate is primarily determined by altitude, leading to a wide range of temperatures throughout your journey. You will experience dramatic shifts as we move between different elevations: • Bogotá (Highland): The capital has a consistently cool, spring-like climate. Expect average temperatures to hover between 13°C and 16°C (55°F and 60°F). • Villa de Leyva (Highland): Temperatures here are mild during the day, averaging 20°C to 22°C (68°F to 72°F), but nights can be much cooler, dropping to 6°C to 8°C (43°F to 46°F). • Barichara & San Gil (Mid-Elevation): The climate is temperate and comfortable, ideal for outdoor sports. Daytime highs are consistently around 24°C to 26°C (75°F to 79°F), with lows around 18°C to 19°C (64°F to 66°F). • Chicamocha Canyon (Low-Elevation): This region can be hot due to its low altitude. While the average temperature is around 22°C to 25°C (72°F to 77°F), temperatures can climb well above 30°C (86°F) at the bottom of the canyon.
Sustainability: We do our best to not produce any trash; we believe that recycling is not enough, so we try to avoid using any plastic or materials that pollute our environment. Every day we work towards being a zero-waste tour operator and our staff is well trained to leave the least impact possible in our service areas. We also work with local indigenous communities in the different regions. By doing so we are able to teach our guests about the rich culture Colombia, all the while helping the people preserve their traditions and lands. By working directly with local peoples, we are able to create a sustainable touristic income for the community.
Guides: All our guides have a professional background from the Tourism University; this means they have a degree in guiding, so their knowledge and skills when leading a group are top-notch. Each guide has many years of experience and they all have taken additional courses for other outdoor activities as well as have International First-Aid certifications. On top of all of this, they are all extremely personable and strive to deliver travel experiences of a lifetime.
Heath advices: No vaccinations needed for this trip.
Given the variety of climates and activities on this expedition, packing in layers is the most effective strategy. You will experience a cool, high-altitude climate in Bogotá and Villa de Leyva before descending into the warmer, more humid temperatures of San Gil and the Chicamocha Canyon.

- Personal First-Aid Kit: Include pain relievers, band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications you may need.
